What it is
Pinterest is the largest visual bookmarking network: people save images and videos ("Pins") to boards, and the feed recommends more of what they save. Pinterest reported 640 million monthly active users in its Q2 2026 results. For designers it is the default mood-board tool that clients already use, covering interiors, fashion, packaging, illustration, type and UI, with a lot of reposted and uncredited material mixed in.
When to open it
Open it for early, broad mood-boarding with a client or team who already has boards, or when you need range across physical design fields (spaces, objects, print) that screen-only galleries don't cover. Use a specialist gallery once you need real, credited interfaces.
Most useful
- Boards and sections, shared with collaborators, for gathering a direction quickly.
- Visual search: select part of a Pin to find visually similar images.
- Recommendations: saving a few strong references tunes the feed towards a style fast.
- GenAI controls: an "AI modified" label on detected images, and a "see fewer" setting for AI images in categories such as art, beauty, fashion, home decor and food, rolled out from October 2025.
Using it with agents
Pinterest runs a developer platform with API v5 (OAuth; new apps start on Trial access, where created Pins stay in a sandbox, and need a review for Standard access). An official MCP server at api.pinterest.com/mcp was announced for searching Pins, managing boards and reading trends, but it was sign-up only at review. Until then, pick a handful of Pins from your board, trace them to their sources, and describe the shared style to the agent in your own words. Community MCP servers exist but are unofficial.
Watch out for
- Credit is often lost: many Pins are reposts that link to aggregators, not the designer. Trace the source before citing.
- AI-generated images are common; labels and filters help but do not catch everything.
- Ads, shopping Pins and engagement-tuned recommendations push toward what is popular rather than what is good.
Reusable ideas
- Let people select a region of an image to search by that detail alone.
- Label AI-modified images and let viewers turn down AI content per category.
- Organise saved references into boards with sections, so one project can hold several directions.
