What it is
Wasmer.sh is a browser shell backed by the Wasmer JavaScript SDK and WebAssembly. Its home screen is a compact chooser for ready-to-run environments: Pi, Node.js, Express, Next.js, Python, databases and command-line tools. Selecting an example opens a fresh workspace with the runtimes it needs.
When to open it
Use it to inspect how a browser-based development environment can start from a task instead of an empty terminal. The Pi example is a particularly direct reference for making a coding agent accessible in a browser without installing a desktop client.
Most useful
- Example picker: groups runnable starting points by AI, Node.js, Python, databases and tools.
- Fresh workspaces: each selection is described with the runtimes and dependencies it needs.
- Full shell: a separate path opens a general-purpose environment with common languages and Unix commands.
- Public implementation: the page links to the Wasmer SDK repository and documentation, where its browser sandbox model is explained.
Using it with agents
The Pi coding-agent example is directly available from the AI group. Developers can also embed the MIT-licensed @wasmer/sdk browser runtime in their own apps; its documentation covers packages, commands, files, processes and ports. The page itself does not expose an MCP endpoint or an agent API.
Watch out for
- The Wasmer SDK is in alpha and may change its less common APIs.
- Browser support and resource limits differ from a native development environment; verify the target runtime before relying on an example.
- Wasmer.sh is a sandbox demonstration. Deployment and hosted Wasmer.io plans have separate pricing and terms.
Reusable ideas
- Offer task-specific launch cards alongside a general shell, so beginners can start without losing the expert path.
- Name the runtime and dependencies before opening a workspace.
- Give each example a fresh environment to make its scope and starting state predictable.
- Present a coding agent as one option within a familiar development surface, not as a separate opaque mode.
